The Centre on Tuesday informed the Supreme Court that it will lift restrictions on 4G mobile internet services in selected areas of Jammu and Kashmir on a trial basis. During the hearing today, the government informed that the review committee concluded that the threat perception still remains high and the situation is still not conducive for full restoration of 4G internet services.
However, Attorney General KK Venugopal said that services can be tried in some areas which are less sensitive on a trial basis.
The AG said the 4G ban will be lifted in one district each in Jammu and Kashmir divisions from August 16.
He told a bench headed by Justice NV Ramana that the Committee has decided that access to 4G internet in J-K will be given in a calibrated manner and outcome of the trial will be reviewed after two months. The bench also comprising Justices R Subhash Reddy and BR Gavai said this is a fairly good stand on the part of the respondents (Centre and J-K administration).
High speed Internet service in Jammu and Kashmir has been suspended since August last year when the Centre had announced revocation of its special status and bifurcation of the state into two Union Territories.
Earlier on August 7, the top court had asked the Jammu and Kashmir administration to explore the possibility of restoring 4G services in certain areas of the Union Territory.
