The special session of the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council (HRC), in which it discussed the “serious human rights situation” in the occupied Palestinian territories, began.
The opening of the session, which was held upon the joint application of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Coordinator Pakistan and the Palestinian state, was made by IHK President Fijili Nazhat Shameem Han.
Informing the 47-member council on the agenda of the special session, Han gave the first floor to UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet.
Bachelet stated that many civilians were killed or injured in Israel’s air strikes on densely populated areas in Gaza and that civilian infrastructure was widely damaged.
Underlining that such attacks raise serious concerns about Israel’s compliance with the “principles of separation and proportionality” under international humanitarian law, Bachelet said, “If it is found to be indiscriminate and disproportionate in terms of its effects on civilians and civilian objects, such attacks may constitute a war crime.” warned.
Stating that the military elements are placed in civilian settlements and the attacks are initiated from here is also a violation of international humanitarian law, “However, the actions of one party do not exempt the other from its obligations under international law.” used the expression.

UN Commissioner for Human Rights, Bachelet, pointed out that the tension in the region started after Israel’s harsh intervention against the Palestinians in East Jerusalem, and then the tension spread to the occupied Palestinian lands and Israel in general.
Stating that according to his own records, Israel killed 242 Palestinians, 63 of whom were children, Bachelet noted that thousands of Palestinians were injured and 74 thousand people were displaced.
Bachelet stated that 28 Palestinians, 5 of them children, were killed by Israeli forces in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and 10 Israeli citizens were killed as a result of rockets launched by Hamas and other Palestinian groups.
In the special session of the Council, the draft resolution submitted jointly by Pakistan and Palestine is expected to be discussed and voted.
