What happened in Kashmir looks a lot like Israel’s rule over Palestine
By revoking autonomy from Kashmir, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is taking a page straight out of the Israeli playbook
India has ordered all tourists and religious pilgrims to evacuate the territory, while sending in tens of thousands of armed soldiers and shutting down virtually all telecommunication networks. These soldiers join an occupying force estimated to number within the hundreds of thousands in what is already considered the most militarized place on earth.
It’s no wonder Kashmiris deeply identify with the plight of the Palestinians. In addition to the graffiti artist, 20 other people have been arrested for pro-Palestian solidarity protests. The police are trying to nip it in the bud:
“We know there is a lot of pent-up anger in people. Our past observations suggest that it needs a trigger to come out and that trigger could be anything,” a police official told Al Jazeera on the condition of anonymity. “Even these solidarity protests could trigger bigger pro-separatist protests. That’s why we don’t want to take a chance this time around,”
And so the brutal suppression of Kashmiris continues…
