India’s total tally of COVID-19 cases surged to 1,24,85,509 with 93,249 new infections, while the recoveries have surged to 1,16,29,289, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Sunday.
The death count increased to 1,64,623 with 513 new fatalities, the data updated at 8 am showed.
Meanwhile, frontline medical and healthcare workers can no longer register for COVID-19 vaccination, the Health Ministry said on Saturday. It said the move is to ensure vaccine coverage expands quickly to include more categories of people, such as those above 45, as frontline medical and healthcare workers have already got first priority and enough time to get vaccinated.
Some ineligible beneficiaries in these two categories have been found adding their names and getting vaccinated in violation of guidelines, the Health Ministry said in the order.

With the addition of 4,931 new cases of coronavirus, the infection count in Thane district of Maharashtra has reached 3,32,666,an official said on Sunday. Besides these new cases reported on Saturday, the virus also claimed the lives of 19 more people, pushing the death toll in the district to 6,544, he said. The COVID-19 mortality rate in the district stood at 1.97 per cent, he said.
Eight states witnessed a steep rise in daily new COVID-19 cases and accounted for 81.42 per cent of the infections reported in the last 24 hours, the Union Health Ministry said. These eight states are Maharashtra, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Madhya Pradesh.

Mumbai today reported more than 9,000 daily coronavirus cases, which is the Maharashtra capital’s highest ever single-day spike. It also logged 27 deaths in the last 24 hours.
According to Mumbai’s municipal body, the Brihanmumbai Corporation or BMC, 9,090 people were tested positive for the virus in 24 hours. 5,322 were discharged, taking the total recovery count to 3,66,365. The recovery rate has slipped to 83 per cent.
The city currently has 62,187 active cases.
Recognising journalists as among those who are working round-the-clock as frontline people amid the pandemic, the Uttarakhand government today announced vaccination for them, age no bar.
“Journalists have supported the fight against the pandemic as frontline workers for communication, spreading awareness and giving out correct information,” the Uttarakhand government said in a statement.
“Since the time the lockdown started and the country eased it gradually, even officers and employees of the information department have been constantly involved in communication and spreading awareness about correct information in tasks related to fighting COVID-19,” the government said.
