The security has been further heightened in Kashmir to ensure the August 15 functions remain incident-free.
This comes after a militant attack at Nowgam byepass that left two policemen dead and another injured.
According to an official, the security arrangements were further strengthened in Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir following a militant strike in city outskirts.
Police and paramilitary CRPF men have been deployed at all vital locations to foil any bid by militants to carry any attack.
The official said that multilayer security arrangements have been made for the main August 15 function which would be held at Sher-e-Kashmir Cricket Stadium here.
Police and paramilitary forces personnel were seen searching vehicles at various places in the Valley as a preparation to ensure incident-free August 15 functions.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha would preside over the main function in Srinagar.
Although, the security beef up in the run up to August 15 are routine every year but the further tightening of an extra alert being maintained by the forces in Kashmir came after two policemen were killed and another injured in a militant attack at Nowgam on the city outskirts on Friday.
Director General of Police, Dilbag Singh said the extended security deployment was made in Srinagar and elsewhere in view of the August 15.
“Unfortunately, the militants attacked a joint party of SSB and Police at Nowgam in which two policemen were killed and another one injured, who is being treated at the hospital,” Singh told reporters on the sidelines of a wreath-laying ceremony here.
The DGP said the militants always try to target the forces and at times they succeed.
He said the anti-militancy operations in Kashmir would be intensified in the days ahead.
“Our neighbour (Pakistan) doesn’t tolerate peace prevailing in the Valley and always plans are made across the LoC to disrupt the situation here,” Singh said. “The efforts to strengthen peace will continue.”
He said policemen were killed when they were deployed to ensure smooth conduct of August 15 function.
Whether more security arrangements would be made in Srinagar, the DGP said the security arrangements across Kashmir would be further strengthened.
