A spokesman for the Indian army said that three Indian soldiers were killed yesterday in unprovoked firing by Pakistani forces on the border in the disputed Kashmir region. For its part, Pakistan accused the Indian forces of violating the ceasefire in the region, and wounding a civilian.
Clashes often break out along the Line of Control, or the ceasefire line in the region, over which both countries claim full sovereignty.
The spokesman for the Indian army, Rajesh Kalia, said that Pakistani forces fired without justification in the Naugam sector early yesterday morning, killing two soldiers and wounding four.
He added that another Indian soldier was killed when Pakistani forces opened fire in the Poonch sector. “Our forces responded with force to the enemy’s fire,” he said.
The Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that it summoned a prominent Indian diplomat in Islamabad yesterday to protest against the violation by Indian forces of the ceasefire at the Line of Control, the day before yesterday, which caused the injury of a 65-year-old civilian.
The statement added that India has committed 2,404 violations of the ceasefire this year, resulting in 19 deaths and 192 civilians injured.
New Delhi says Pakistani forces are opening fire to help militants infiltrate the Indian-controlled side of Kashmir to join an armed insurgency that has been going on for decades.
Islamabad says it only provides moral and diplomatic support to the people of Kashmir, who are fighting for self-determination.
