The director of the Emirati Project to Help Pakistan, Abdullah Khalifa Al Ghafli, said that the UAE vaccination campaign, one of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s initiative to eradicate polio in the world, comes within the framework of the UAE’s humanitarian approach and in cooperation with international organizations and institutions to provide humanitarian and health assistance to needy and poor communities and peoples. And support global efforts to eradicate polio and reduce its incidence by a large percentage in the countries targeted by the initiative, namely the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.
Al-Ghafli stressed the great importance of the success of this campaign, which was carried out for the second month in a row, to vaccinate children of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan against polio in light of the outbreak of the new Corona virus, noting that the aim of implementing the campaign is to protect young children from the risk of the spread of the polio virus, which has reached the number of cases with it. This year, Pakistan has 68 cases, especially in the areas whose children are considered the most threatening and vulnerable to infection, and the geographical scope of the campaign included 88 difficult and high-risk areas in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and tribal regions, Balochistan region, Punjab region, and Sindh region, with the participation of more than 82 One thousand doctors, monitors, vaccination team members, and more than 20,000 protection, security, and management and coordination teams.
He explained that this campaign was carried out with modern procedures and measures and with high preventive standards, including the holding of training courses to qualify the staff to perform the task in light of field challenges and risks related to their protection and safety, and to ensure the protection of children targeted for vaccination from infection with the “Corona” virus, and they were also provided with personal protective equipment including clothes and masks. Gloves and sterilization materials, in addition to implementing a new media and social awareness plan, to encourage parents and urge them to take the initiative to vaccinate their children and prevent them from contracting polio, in addition to protecting them from exposure to the risk of infection with the Coronavirus.
The precautionary measures for the vaccination teams during the implementation of the campaign included conducting comprehensive checks for them and ensuring their safety from infection with the “Corona” virus before participating in the campaign, preventing the participation of people over the age of 50 years in the campaign, as well as preventing the participation of any person with chronic diseases, and not increasing the number of any vaccination team. For two individuals, preventing them from directly touching children during vaccination, and protecting vaccines from touching by any other party, in addition to another preventive measure directed to parents of children related to sterilizing their hands before vaccinating their children, and distributing free masks to them.
It is noteworthy that the UAE vaccination campaign began in 2014 and until August 2020, it managed to give 468 million 443 thousand and 542 vaccination doses against polio to more than 86 million Pakistani children.
